365 Things To Do In Portland, Oregon

Tasty bites await in Beaumont Village at Soluna Grill

Blake Ellis - Saturday, June 26, 2010

I had the pleasure of joining some friends in Beaumont Village for dinner at Soluna Grill.  It was my first time at the restaurant, and I definitely set out to get a feel for what they offer.

We decided to fill ourselves with appetizers and shared a couple entrees as well.   Some notable items on the starters list were the artichoke and goat cheese tart and yellowfin poke (one of my friends is Hawaiian, and the poke got his approval, so it must be good!).  The entrees we tried were smoked pork cheek chili and potato gnocchi with chicken.  The food at Soluna was really good.  I'll definitely be back.

The restaurant also hosts a supper club featuring multi course themed dinners paired with wine.  Seating for these events is limited to 30 people.  Attend a few of these and you'll be a regular in no time!

Gotta try it... A reborn restaurant space on NW Irving St in Portland, Oregon

Blake Ellis - Friday, June 18, 2010

I warned you.  You're going to be able to eat your way through Portland, Oregon like a pro after reading these posts.  I tried to refrain from a restaurant post today, but I've had the pleasure of visiting Irving Street Kitchen in Portland, Oregon's Pearl District a couple times this week, and I am a very happy camper.

Irving Street Kitchen is the new occupant of the space formerly known as Bay 13, which didn't fare so well, and closed last year. I was a little worried that the Bay 13 vibes might continue on for this new place, but my worries were appeased QUICKLY.  Very nice staff and a menu full of really good, not too expensive food.  The space is cool.  It's a large space for a restaurant in the neighborhood, but the new owners managed to warm the place up a bit.  The far side of the dining room has cozy little booths with curtains, and the main dining room is lit with some really nice chandeliers with Edison-style bulbs.

And the food, you ask?

Bacon wrapped fried oysters? Yes please.  Duck confit with duck sausage and wild rice? I'll have two!  The food is really well put together.  It's classy comfort food, and both servers that helped me definitely seemed to be foodies, as well.  They were able to navigate me through the menu and had well formed opinions to share.

The chocolate cake with pistachio brittle and the spicy doughnuts with coffee semifreddo were SO GOOD.

Definitely try out this new Pearl District eatery.  I hope they'll be there for a long time.  Oh, oh!  And during the day, they set up shop right on the corner of NW 13th and Irving, and you can buy all kinds of awesome BBQ food for really good deals at lunch time.

June is "Dining Month" in Portland, Oregon

Blake Ellis - Tuesday, June 15, 2010

It will become readily apparent as I continue to write that I am a big foodie.  I love eating out in Portland.  There are so many options, so many amazing chefs, and delicious stuff at all price points all over town.  As I was flipping through the latest issue of Portland Monthly Magazine this weekend, I realized that I may be adding a few pounds this month.  I turned the page to find an advertisement that read "In June, the chefs who set the foodie world abuzz say thanks.  Portland's acclaimed restaurants, from downtown and beyond, will strut their inventive stuff with select 3-course meals for a mere $25"

According to the event website, "Dining Month Portland is a month-long promotion featuring three-course dinners for $25, for the entire month of June 2010.  Approximately 50 restaurants in the city are participating.  The locations of the restaurants and their menus are listed onwww.diningmonthportland.com.  Dining Month Portland runs the entire month of June 2010 and the three-course menus are valid every day of the week."

I'll see you around town. I'm getting my elastic waisted pants ready! But it will be worth every calorie.
